TIME MAGAZINE
Potomac geofilter
As part of a senior project, in which I was tasked with replicating a major magazine cover, I created a cover of Time magazine that featured me.
This project was completed well before my professional interest in design had taken off.
Geofilters are logo-like designs that Snapchat users can add to their photos. After Snapchat began allowing user-made geofilters, I wanted to be able to contribute.
dESIGN CHOICES
Personally, the most significant choice I made was the squiggle underneath the name. This artistic shape brought a little more excitement to the design overall without drawing the focus away from the name. The balanced shape of the squiggle led me to center the design overall.
DESIGN PROCESS
After designing the geofilter, I then had to draw out the boundary of the geofilter, which proved to be more complicated than I had initially thought. I started with Potomac Village, our town’s main set of strip malls, and tried to work my way out. After this also proved challenging, I switched strategies: start from the outside. I used Google Maps to find the official boundary of the census-designated place known as Potomac, Maryland as a basis, and then slightly modified it based on my own understanding. For example, my own home is in an unincorporated part of town, such that it does not appear within the boundaries of Potomac, North Potomac, nor Travilah. However, the area that my neighborhood associate most with is Potomac.
After answering these “Would they call themselves Potomac?” questions, I marked the boundary for the geofilter and submitted my design.
